New Patients
Everything you need before your first visit.
A little preparation lets us spend your appointment on your skin rather than on paperwork.

Scheduling
One concern per appointment
Please book a separate appointment for each significant concern. A full-body skin cancer screening, a rash evaluation, an acne consultation, a hair loss evaluation and a cosmetic consultation each require their own history, examination and discussion.
If you are not sure how to book, call us at 605-600-8380 and we will help you schedule the right visit.
Bring with you
What to have ready
- Photo identification, your insurance card, and a credit card to place on file
- A list of your medications, including over-the-counter products and supplements
- A list of products you apply to your skin, scalp or nails
- Your medical history, including previous skin cancers, biopsies and surgeries
- Names of previous dermatologists, and records if you have them
- Your referral, if your insurance plan requires one
- A written list of your questions — it is easy to forget them in the room
Preparation
How to prepare
- Come without makeup and without tinted sunscreen if your face will be examined
- Remove nail polish if your nails or a skin examination are involved
- Wear your hair loose rather than in a tight style, so the scalp can be examined
- For a full skin examination, expect to change into a gown
- Arrive 10 to 15 minutes early for your first visit to complete intake forms
- Photographs of an intermittent rash are genuinely helpful — bring them on your phone
First visit
What to expect, step by step
When you arrive, we will scan your insurance card and identification into your chart, collect your copay, and hand you a tablet to review your information and sign any consents that were not completed on the patient portal.
A member of our nursing staff will bring you to an exam room, verify your medical history, and document a brief description of your dermatologic concerns. Time for this is included in your appointment, so you can expect to see the provider within 10 to 15 minutes after your appointment time. Then you will have the chance to sit down and talk through how we can help you get the care you deserve.
Before you leave the exam room, our nursing staff will schedule any necessary follow-up visits, go over your care instructions with you, and send in any prescriptions. You only need to stop at the front desk to check out if you had cosmetic treatments — those services are paid on the day of your visit.
Any medical procedures and your office visit are billed to insurance, and an invoice is sent to you by text with the option to pay online. You may see a notice of that option — and a chance to opt out — before you even leave our office for the day.
Policies
Confirming your appointment
All new patient, surgical and cosmetic appointments must be confirmed 24 hours before your appointment time. We send text and email reminders, and you can confirm by text; if we don't hear from you, we will call. An appointment that is still unconfirmed 24 hours ahead is treated as a no-show under our no-show policy, and the time slot is released to patients on our wait list. We apologize in advance for this strict rule.
We also require a photograph of your face — it genuinely supports your care — and a credit card on file. We will always notify you of your bill before charging it.
Arrival
When to arrive, and if you're running late
- Established patients, and new patients who completed their medical history on the patient portal: arrive 5 minutes early.
- New patients who have not completed their history online: arrive 15 minutes early, and bring a full list of allergies, medical conditions and medications — or simply bring the medications themselves, or a photo of them.
Arriving 15 minutes or more past your appointment time is considered late, and we may have to reschedule you. We always do our best to fit late arrivals in, but late arrivals affect every patient scheduled after you, not just the next one.
Cancellations
No-shows and fees
Please give us as much notice as possible if you cannot keep an appointment, so the time can be offered to another patient. Missing an appointment without a call to cancel at least 24 hours ahead is considered a no-show.
- Beginning with the third missed appointment, a $75 no-show fee applies. It is not covered by insurance and must be paid before your next appointment.
- A missed surgical appointment carries a $250 fee, because of the time reserved.
- Cosmetic services are paid at the time of booking, including a $150 cosmetic consultation for non-members — which can be applied to a cosmetic treatment booked and completed within 6 months.
If something unavoidable happens, call us. We are reasonable people, and we would rather hear from you.
Visit scope
One main concern per visit
Rashes, acne, hair loss and skin cancer screenings are standalone appointments. These visits involve a thorough history, possible testing or biopsies, and a full discussion of medication options, risks and benefits — so they cannot be combined with each other or added onto another visit.
We schedule only enough time to address one main issue. If your needs change, we may have to reschedule part of your visit to another day — but we will always try to address your most pressing concern first.
Minors and guests
Bringing family
A legal guardian must accompany patients under 18 to their initial appointment so consents can be signed and medical history confirmed; otherwise the visit will be rescheduled. For follow-up visits, minors may come alone only if we have a signed Consent to Treat Minor form on file — we can email one on request. Copays and cosmetic fees are due at the time of service whether or not a parent is present.
Please limit guests to one per patient whenever possible. And a note on privacy: HIPAA prevents us from discussing a patient's appointments, bills or care with anyone — spouse or adult child included — unless the patient has added them as an approved contact in their chart. We ask about this at each visit.
Communication
Messages, results and prescriptions
Clinical communication happens by phone or through our approved secure patient communication platform. Please do not send symptoms, photographs or other health information by ordinary email or through any form on this website.
Biopsy results are typically available within 2 weeks. We will contact you with them. If you have not heard from us and are wondering, please call — following up is never a bother.
Prescription refill requests are handled fastest through your pharmacy or the secure platform.
Costs
Insurance, cash pay and membership
We are in network with many plans, we do not accept Medicaid, and we offer straightforward cash-pay rates of $250 for an initial visit and $150 for follow-ups. A concierge membership is also available.
Full details are on our insurance and billing page and our membership page.
This page is general education and is not medical advice, diagnosis or treatment, and it does not create a physician–patient relationship. Individual circumstances differ; please discuss your own skin with a qualified clinician. If you are having a medical emergency, call 911.
